87. Fletch

Chevy Chase stars in Fletch as Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher, a Los Angeles news paper reporter who goes undercover for articles under his alias “Jane Doe”.  While posing as a junkie at the beach, he is approached by the filthy rich Mr. Stanwyck (Tim Matheson) who offers Fletch $50,000.00 to kill him because he has bone cancer and doesn’t want to commit suicide in fear of losing his life insurance.  Fletch immediately notices that something is awry and continues his undercover work to figure out Mr. Stanwyck’s true plot while posing as a doctor, tennis player, bum, you name it!  Throughout his investigation he battles the crooked cops, divorce lawyers, and even romances Mrs. Stanwyck (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) along the way.

While Fletch is lacking any serious plot, the film is basically a vehicle for Chevy Chase to play dress up and crack as many jokes as possible.  Being a Chevy Chase fan, I thought it was classic 80’s comedy, and was pretty shocked that I’ve never seen it until now.  Tagged with a PG-rating, the comedy is squeaky clean but Chase’s talent and demeanor throughout Fletch has generous appeal and constant laughs for all.
