79. Repo Man

Repo Man stars Emilio Estevez as Otto, a young slacker forced to get a real job after his father gives the family’s life savings away to a televangelist.  After a repo man named Bud (Harry Dean Stanton) cons him into helping steal a car, he agrees to become a repo man to make some quick money and snort copious amounts of cocaine with Bud.    Bud informs Otto that a certain ’64 Malibu has a repo prize of $20,000.00 – if the drug lords and special agents don’t get it first.  I can’t in good conscience spoil any of the rest for the uninitiated.

Repo Man easily ranks among some of the  best classic, bat-shit crazy films of the 80’s (along with Return to Oz, Big Trouble in Little China, etc.).  There is so much unintentional (or is it?) humor, hilarious car chases, and gratuitous profanity that I laughed all the way to the end.  The film was obviously produced on a low budget which adds a unique gritty charm.  This is by no means The Godfather, but it was one of the funnest films I’ve watched all year.  Basically any movie with Harry Dean Stanton as a repo man has to somehow be awesome…
