As I was getting on a plane heading to LAX last week with my brother, I read a tweet which said “Kyle MacLachlan pours his wine in Los Angeles this weekend”. It seemed too good to be true, but it wasn’t!!! What incredible timing! Since my days as a third grader drawing cartoons of Special Agent Dale Cooper, I’ve been a card carrying Twin Peaks fanatic. Anyone who knows me knows that I get a kick out of meeting artists I admire, so this rare opportunity was quite a thrill.
My brother and I entered Wally’s Wine in Westwood and immediately saw MacLachlan pouring his wine to prospective customers. I paid the $10 fee, got my glass and moseyed over, repressing all urges to say things like “today you remind me of a mexican chiuauau” or “that gum you like is going to come back in style” and instead kindly said “hello” and held out my wine glass as he matter-of-factly informed me that this was the 2006 version of …Pursued by Bear‘s Cabernet Sauvignon. It was truly surreal. I took a sip and then restrained myself from spitting it out and announcing “damn fine wine!” as I headed to get a slice of cheese and maintain all composure.
I went on to try the 2007 and 2008 versions of the Cabernet before finishing off with the Syrah, which was delightful while I also got to catch up with my friend and fellow Twin Peaks fan Richard between refills. I finally got up the nerve to ask Kyle about the wine and its Washington State roots as we talked a little about living in the Pacific Northwest. I opted for a bottle of the 2006 Cab and got it signed, as well as a picture with the man himself. I finally gave in to the urge and said “I’m a huge Twin Peaks fan ever since I watched it on ABC when I was little”, managing to not completely blow my cover as an all-out crazy super fan. We said thanks and headed on out the door. Overall a wonderful and strange encounter.
On a closing note, I highly suggest …Pursued by Bear! I will save my bottle for a special occasion, perhaps “25 years later” amirite?
