In one of the all time best movie scenes ever, (in my most humble of opinions) Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia perform a rousing rendition of “Chopsticks” on a huge piano to cheering bystanders in BIG. In 1989, during my first visit to FAO Schwarz in New York I remember a very small version of this piano, but it couldn’t have held more than an octave or two. It was cool, but it lacked the grandiosity of a really giant piano where two people could play “Chopsticks”.
In another visit around 5 years later I remember no big piano at all, just a bunch of plastic mats the store was trying to sell. They looked cheap and not very fun, and perhaps targeted at toddlers…
SO, on my last trip to New York this spring I was thrilled to see that the store had gone all out and totally owned up to their claim to fame with a giant freakin’ piano – complete with the chance to get your picture made at a total rip-off of a price! I doubt that the piano is in the same location as the famous scene once was, but here it is nonetheless as it looks today.
amazingly, Robert Loggia topped himself in the epic Mr. Eddy “six fucking car lengths” tirade 10 years later in Lost Highway
