23. X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class gets down to business and shows how Professor X (James McAvoy) meets Magneto (played by stone cold Michael Fassbender), and how the teams of earthly mutants end up at odds with each other.  Constant action and solid performances (except for a very blah January Jones) set up future films with style and perhaps a little 60’s silliness ala the old Batman TV series echoed by Kevin Bacon as the evil Sebastian Shaw plotting World War 3 via the Cuban Missile Crisis-he even has his own submarine.

Tons of fun and little filler make this well worth your time.  Even if you are a newcomer the film sets up the X-Men universe in a clear and concise manner.  I bet the hardcore geeks like it too-especially a pretty funny cameo by Hugh Jackman.

The survey says…4 stars out of 5…

I really liked it, and I don’t say that often…
I think what this film did right that the other xmen movies sucked at was that they spent as much time on the emotional investment in the characters as they did on the special effects. Though I thought mystique defaulted a little too easily. (Guess she had the hots for magneto)
