its the way that he sings

I had the good fortune of catching My Morning Jacket in Nashville last night. It had been a long time (3 years and 1 month) since I had the pleasure of seeing them. I had never heard any Evil Urges tracks live before, so it was sweet to see a good amount of them played, namely “Highly Suspicious”, “Smokin’ from Shootin'” and “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream” Pts. 1 and 2.

The guys opened with “One Big Holiday” and never looked back. Even though they were only playing their second show in over a year, they never missed a beat and they shredded harder than the other 6 or 7 times I’ve seen them.

It was also a wonderful surprise to hear the Monsters of Folk track “Losin’ Yo Head” as I’ve always thought that song would be a great addition to MMJ’s set. Two brand new songs were played, one was sort of slow and blues-y with the pedal steel in full effect and another song called “Friends Again” which was more uptempo and reportedly about the city of Birmingham, Alabama. They both seemed kind of “safe” to me, but who knows, I’m not going to put much stock in a first impression.
The encore had the Preservation Hall Jazz Band sitting in with the horns in full effect and a killer version of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up”. I think the show ran almost a full 2.5 hours with very little time between songs. With that said, GO SEE THESE GUYS. Even if you’ve never heard them before, you can’t lose. Setlist below…
