Panda Bear – Person Pitch. 2007. released domestically on Asthmatic Kitty.
The more and more I think about it, this must be my favorite album of the past decade. Largely built around samples from everything betwixt and between Japanese anime, Cat Stevens, and The Tornadoes – Panda Bear masterfully weaves a landmark recording together, all topped off with his Brian Wilson-esque vocals drenched in reverb. While at first it may not be the most accessible record (with two tracks topping the 12-minute mark), every peel of the onion reveals something new, something catchy, and something other-worldly that got buried deep within those first 4 or 5 listens. At the very least, “Comfy in Nautica” and “Bros” are absolutely required listens.
Panda Bear is set to release the follow-up to 2007’s Person Pitch this September with the brand new LP Tomboy.
