Blue Velvet – Ben’s Place

Some of the most memorable, or perhaps quotable scenes from Blue Velvet occur at Ben’s Place, and fortunately for us the exterior still stands at a dive bar known as the Barbary Coast in downtown Wilmington on Front Street.

The neon “This Is It” sign still blurs proudly in the window above the door (sadly not to the right though), and you can get a Pabst Blue Ribbon all day everyday for only $1.50.

A few scenes were filmed inside, including one of Frank Booth beating up a patron on the pool table, however everything filmed inside was left on the cutting room floor. It smells like smoke and is a little run down, but for any Lynch and/or Blue Velvet fan it is a historical landmark…

Just one block north from the Barbary Coast is the historic Roudabush building, where the interior scenes for Ben’s Place were filmed. All scenes were filmed on the third floor, which has now been converted into a wedding reception hall known as The Balcony. I was unable to visit this site, however judging from the pictures on their website, there is nothing left that is recognizable due to remodeling, so save your tears…you can always get married there for the right price though!
