“It’s daddy, you shithead…where’s my bourbon?!!”
Easily my favorite filming location to visit from Blue Velvet was the infamous apartment of Dorothy Vallens.
This ominous building still stands as it did in 1985, and is just as strong a presence in real life as it was in the film. In the non fictional world, it is known as the Carolina Apartments which serve mainly as housing for UNC Wilmington students. The only major change is to the lobby, which has received an unfortunate modern facelift, erasing much of the gritty and seedy charm it used to have. The elevator now works…
I was also thrilled to see that the staircase stood just as it did in the film! This building truly had me in awe, and I just had to venture back at night to walk up the stairway and soak it all in.
Unfortunately for all of the voyeurs and sadists out there, the interior scenes of Dorothy’s Apartment were filmed on the only set used during the filming of Blue Velvet, but everything else to my knowledge was filmed on location.
